Although this more hands-off approach might work in the long-term, it can make the player feel cheated when faced with a setback because of a mechanic the game never directly taught the player, or, worse, if the player never learns these systems, defeated.Despite this, if you have some patience to learn the finer details of the game, you'll be well rewarded, as, once you have the full toolset, you'll be able to handle, realistically, anything the game throws at you.
